Professor Malcolm Richardson PhD, FSB, FRCPath, FISSE

Malcolm Richardson is Director of the Mycology Reference Centre, Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester and has an affiliate appointment at the University of Manchester as a Honorary Professor of Medical Mycology. Prior to these positions he was an Associate Professor of Medical Mycology, University of Helsinki, Finland. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) and of the Society of Biology (UK). His clinical and laboratory investigations have focused on the pathogenicity, diagnosis and epidemiology of superficial and systemic fungal infections. More recently he has applied his diagnostic experience to investigating the role of moulds in “sick building syndrome”. In recognition of this he has recently been elected as President of the Institute of Specialist Surveys and Engineers. He has published over 350 original articles, book chapters, reviews and policy documents, and is the author or editor of fifteen mycological textbooks and handbooks, including Fungal Infection: Diagnosis and Management, 4th Edition (2012), The Pocket Guide to Fungal infection, 2nd Edition (2006), Therapeutic Guidelines in Systemic Fungal Infection, 4th Edition (2007), and Fungal Infection and Critical Care Medicine (2008).

His professional duties include being Editor-in-Chief of Critical Reviews in Microbiology. Critical Reviews in Microbiology is delighted to announce that its 2011 Impact Factor increased to 6.270 from 5.345 in 2010. The journal now ranks 13/107 in ISI’s Microbiology category. Previous duties have included being the General Secretary of the International Society of Human and Animal Mycology (ISHAM) (2003-2009). In June 2012 Malcolm Richardson was elected as President-Elect of ISHAM (2012-2015) and will take up the position of ISHAM President in 2015. He is also a mycology consultant for various environmental, pharmaceutical and health care companies.
