The Foundation of TIMM was first proposed by Dr. Shoichi Okinaga, at that time as he is today, President of Teikyo University, Tokyo in 1983. The aim was to establish on institution to promote research, education and international exchange programs concerned with medical mycology and related scientific fields. Our scope of activities are epidemiology, diagnosis, therapy and prevention of mycoses; discovery, development and evaluation of new antifungal agents; ultrastructural study of fungal cells; physiology and genetics of yeast; DNA diagnosis, treatment and epidemiological analysis of fungal diseases; Phylogenetic analysis of pathogenic fungi. Among these major functions and activities of TIMM is the collection, preservation and distribution of strains of fungi potentially pathogenic for humans and animals. Many of these have been isolated from clinical materials in this country, and are utilized in work on the taxonomy and systematics of pathogenic fungi as well as for studies of epidemiology, pathogenesis, immunology, diagnosis and chemotherapy of resultant mycotic diseases.
