Abstract:
Introduction: Invasive mold infections are a growing problem worldwide with invasive aspergillosis (IA) and invasive mucormycosis (IM) as two of the most common mold infections. Increasing incidence of IA and IM is multifactorial. More widespread adoption of aggressive therapy practices including chemotherapy, transplantation, and intensive care use contributes to greater numbers of infections.
Objectives:To report cases with dual mold infections.
Methods: This study presents a series of 7 cases with dual invasive mold infections in patients with underlying multiple risk factors.
Results: Out of 7 cases maximum age group was between 50-60 years and maximum were females. The major risk factor was T2DM. The majority could be diagnosed via culture and HPE. Majority treated with amphotericin B and posaconazole, among 7;4 recovered well and 3 succumbed to death.
Conclusion:In conclusion, there is an urgent and unmet need for well-designed studies on the “net state of immunosuppression” and environmental exposures as risk factors for mixed mold infections. Non-invasive fungal diagnostics, including serial testing by biomarkers and development of new assays, and the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of antimould prophylaxis in potentially susceptible hosts with characteristics other than transplant or neutropenia. Such clinical-translational research may help decrease morbidity and mortality from invasive mold infections.
