Microfungi.net

Microfungi.net is designed to teach the identification of fungal infection by direct (wet) microscopy and by histology in a full range of tissue specimens. All that is required is a simple microscope. For histology you will learn how to make stains and correctly interpret them. The use of simple microscopy is a more rapid method than direct culture and often more effective. These skills will assist a rapid diagnosis of a fungal infection in a patient and improve the chances of early treatment.

Microfungi.net is a microscopy training course in 4 key modules hosted by Fungal Infection Trust, LIFE and University of Manchester.

The course is designed to teach the identification of fungal infection by direct (wet) microscopy and by histology in a full range of tissue specimens. All that is required is a simple microscope. For histology you will learn how to make stains and correctly interpret them. The use of simple microscopy is a more rapid method than direct culture and often more effective. These skills will assist a rapid diagnosis of a fungal infection in a patient and improve the chances of early treatment.

An extensive  range of e-learning units, teaching basic microscopy, wet mounts, staining techniques and stain preparation in modules 1 and 2. Module 3 teaches  how to make a histological section, how to preserve the fungal  elements and tissue integrity by correct sample processing, through to identifying common and rare fungal  features in a diverse range of tissue samples. Module 4 on advanced skills in histology for identification of uncommon and rare fungal diseases, will be released in March 2017.

The courses are illustrated with many images and are supplemented with quizzes, tests and slide presentations. Each module has pre- and post- assessments and final assessment tests. Successful completion of each module will allow the student to download a certificate accredited by the University of Manchester. Access to the course will also provide the user with a continuous reference source.
