Abstract:
Isolation of the causal fungi from combined aspergillosis and phycomycosis in two okapi calves was attempted. The phycomycete (Absidia corymbifera) was isolated only on malt agar incorporating chloramphenicol, whilst Aspergillus fumigatus grew readily on several media. The blood of the second calf lacked antibodies to 4 antigenic extracts of A. fumigatus tested by gel diffusion. Examination of the hay and straw samples failed to reveal large numbers of spores of A. fumigatus or A. corymbifera. Attempts to record spore concentrations in the air of the okapi house also failed to show large numbers of these fungi.
