Abstract:

Correspondence; no abstract. First three paragraphs: We wish to report a case of fungal encephalitis due to Aspergillus fumigatus infection in a juvenile male northern bottlenose whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus) that stranded on the north-east coast of Scotland at North Kessock, Highland, in October 2006.!
!!
!The whale was sighted circling and in extremis in shallow water during the late afternoon of October 16, 2006. The animal subsequently live stranded on the beach and died after a very short period of time.!
!!
!Postmortem examination was performed according to a recognised protocol for cetaceans developed as a part of the Collaborative uk Marine Mammal Strandings Project. Full gross, micro-biological and histological examinations were carried out to establish as far as possible the most likely causes of the live stranding and death.
