Abstract:

ABSTRACT: A clinico-microbial study was carried out in 54 clinically diagnosed cases of otomycosis. The fungi isolated were Aspergillus niger (41.1 percent), Aspergillus flavus (24 percent), Aspergillus fumigatus (3.7 percent). Candida albicans (5.5 percent) and other Candida species (3.7 percent), Mucor (1.8 percent) and Penicillium (3.7 percent). The bacteria isolated were Proteus species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Diphtheroids. The most common symptoms observed were pain in the ear (94.4 percent) followed by itching (92.5 percent). The most common predisposing factors were abuse of topical antibiotic aural preparations (79.6 percent) followed by ear cleaning with unsterilised sticks (75.9 percent). Clinical cure and mycological clearance were achieved after initial suction cleaning and use of miconazole ear drop for 6 weeks.
