Abstract:

Filamentous fungi and yeasts can be used to solubilise metal ions from solid substrates with ecological sustainable, non-polluting and energy saving processes. These metals can then be recovered from solution for further recycling steps. Such biohydrometallurgical processes with fungi are especially appropriate when the solid substrate to be leached gives an alkaline reaction in solution so that acidophilic bacteria (e. g.Acidithiobacillus spp.) can not be used. Such substrates are, for instance, industrial secondary raw materials like filter dusts and carbonate containing low-grade ores
